We're no longer tracking the latest version of Java here, please look at Oracle's Java downloads page for more information.
This page used to track what the latest version of the Java Browser Plugin was, however since web browsers haven't supported the Java plugin for many years now, it was confusing for some visitors, and also not relevant any more.
The Browser Based Java "applets" (and the browser plugin required to make them run) had been steadily declining in popularity for more than a decade, and the functionality of them have since been replaced by more modern web technologies. Firefox 52 Extended Support Release was the last version of Firefox to support Java applets. Chrome 44 was the last version of Chrome to support Java applets.
Java is still a very popular programming language; it continues to be developed and used by many developers around the world, what has ended is the support for running it in your web browser.
As discussed in our Java vs JavaScript article, there is a difference between Java and JavaScript - we are no longer tracking the latest version of Java - JavaScript continues to live on in web browsers and probably will for a very, very long time.
